Jobless migrants should leave, say many in EU

Most people in the European Union's five largest member-states want immigrants to leave their countries if they do not have a job, according to an opinion poll out today.

The Financial Times/ Harris poll underscores the risk of social tensions over immigration and the use of foreign labour as Europe's worst recession since 1945 takes hold and causes a steep rise in unemployment.

EU policymakers were alarmed in January when strikes broke out at several British plants after a construction contract at a Total oil refinery was awarded to a company using workers who were mainly Italian and Portuguese.
