Swine flu cases confirmed in New Zealand

New Zealand yesterday became the first country in the Asia- Pacific region to confirm cases of swine flu, as nations around the world geared up for a likely global pandemic.

Japan tightened visa requirements for Mexicans, one of a series of unilateral steps to discourage travel, highlighting national approaches that disregarded advice from the World Health Organisation.

As the number of H1N1 cases officially confirmed rose to 79, the WHO, which on Monday concluded there was a “significant risk” of a pandemic, said it was convening experts to provide information on the spread, nature and treatment of the flu.
