The United Nations Security Council on Monday evening condemned North Korea's nuclear test, saying it would vote on a binding resolution, including possible new sanctions, later this week.
The 15-member council took little over an hour to express “strong opposition and condemnation” in what Susan Rice, the US ambassador, described as a “swift, clear message” to the North Korean regime.
Vitaly Churkin, Russian envoy and current Security Council president, said the council would immediately start working on a new resolution, and added that member states demanded that North Korea abide by existing resolutions, including one passed in 2006 following its first nuclear test.
