All major carmakers posted higher sales in the US last month than in April, with heavy discounting boosting even General Motors and Chrysler, which are both in bankruptcy protection.
The US uptick - which was revealed as news broke that China's Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery Company is to buy GM's Hummer brand - mirrors an improvement in many other parts of the world.
The market is "starting to make a turn for the positive", said Mike DiGiovanni, GM sales analyst. "We think we are starting to emerge from this global downturn."
