EXPORTS RISE FUELS HOPES OF TAIWAN RECOVERY

Taiwan's exports hit a six-month high in May, fuelling hopes of an early recovery for the export-oriented island economy on the back of closer economic ties with China.

May exports were nearly 9 per cent up on April, although they were still 31.4 per cent lower than a year ago, according to data released by the Ministry of Finance yesterday.

The May rebound, led by improving exports of electronics and other high-tech goods, resumes a trend of month-on-month improvements in exports this year that had only been broken by a slight decline in April.
