Chip recovery ‘in three years'

The worst of the downturn is over but it will take two to three years for the semiconductor industry to recover to a “normal” level, according to the president of NEC Electronics, one of Japan's largest chipmakers.

Junshi Yamaguchi's remarks, in an interview with the Financial Times, are a caution against assuming that the recent stabilisation in the technology sector will quickly turn into a full recovery.

“[A proper recovery] will take two to three years because the dip was so significant for the industry. Unless our customer performance recovers, we're not going to recover, and according to forecasts from our various customers, it will take two to three years to get back to a normal level,” Mr Yamaguchi said.
