AUSTRALIAN ECONOMY CONTINUES TO SHINE

The Australian economy expanded at a higher than expected rate in the three months ended June, helped by robust contributions from the household sector and business spending on machinery and equipment.

The Australian Bureaus of Statistics said on Wednesday that seasonally-adjusted gross domestic product grew by 0.6 per cent in the second quarter compared to the previous three months.

Economists had been looking for a figure of closer to 0.2 per cent after trade figures announced on Tuesday showed an unexpectedly sharp fall in exports during the three months ended March.
