India's greenhouse gas emissions are set at least to quadruple over the next 20 years as the country expands its economy, according to official estimates released yesterday.
But India defied international pressure to curb emissions by stressing that output per capita would stay below that of developed countries.
“The results are unambiguous. Even with very aggressive [gross domestic product] growth . . . India's per capita emissions will be well below developed country averages,” said Jairam Ramesh, environment minister.
