Charles Li: Man who finds himself at a ‘historic crosspoint'

Charles Li, the incoming chief executive of Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing, is emblematic of a new class of mainland Chinese professional gaining prominence across Hong Kong's financial industry.

Born in Beijing and brought up in Gansu province, Mr Li worked on the Bohai oil field before his ascent in the world of investment banking, where until recently he was chairman of JPMorgan's China business.

His appointment to HKEx highlights how professionals with deep links to the mainland are gaining prominence in Hong Kong, as the territory seeks to strengthen its position as the world's financial gateway to China.
