The 16 countries at the East Asia Summit yesterday agreed to consider competing Japanese and Australian proposals to expand regional co-operation, but failed to clarify whether the US would be involved.
Abhisit Vejjajiva, the Thai prime minister and summit chairman, said the member countries were open to further discussions on both proposals as part of “an ongoing process to flesh out these concepts”.
Summit leaders noted, however, that neither Yukio Hatoyama, the Japanese prime minister, nor Kevin Rudd, his Australian counterpart, had spelt out how their proposals would work, or whether the US would have a role to play.
