Foreign insurance groups, which flocked to the fast-growing Chinese market over the past decade, face crucial decisions over how – or whether – to develop their mainland business.
A handful of overseas groups, including HSBC, entered the Chinese market by acquiring an equity stake in existing insurance companies, while many started joint ventures with domestic partners.
Industry analysts say that many of the 29 joint ventures have now reached a fork in the road, amid mounting disagreements among partners on strategy or recognition that fresh investment is required to grow further.
