Coca-Cola already owns two of China's three best selling sparkling drinks but by 2020 it wants to have four more $1bn brands in what has become its third-largest market by revenue.
The ambitious target reflects Coca-Cola's confidence that its long-term plans to more than triple sales in China are secure both from domestic rivals and from potential political pitfalls.
Coca-Cola's revenues have grown by a compound annual rate of 19 per cent over the past five years and it claims to be widening its lead over its rivals. It says it has double PepsiCo's total sales in China, supported in particular by its stronger presence in still drinks, water and juices.
