UN APPEALS FOR COPENHAGEN CLIMATE DEAL

The United Nations called on world leaders to stay at the climate talks in Copenhagen, until a deal is reached as tough negotiations continued into the evening.

Leaders including US president Barack Obama were locked in hard bargaining over contentious issues including cuts in greenhouse gas emissions and the way that measures to deliver those cuts would be scrutinised.

There was also wide support for developed countries to pay poor countries with aid worth $100bn a year by 2020, from both government and private sector sources.
