Sir, Your Comment pages on January 14 contain two references to China's “bluff” being called in the spat with Google. What “bluff” is this, exactly?
The Oxford English Dictionary defines the word as “an attempt to deceive someone into believing that one can or will do something”. When it comes to censorship, China is not seeking to deceive anybody as to what it can do, as the record shows all too clearly. No bluff in official control of media, closure of websites and jailing of dissidents.
The State Council statement in People's Daily the same day makes quite clear that the regulations are not for bending.
