TAIWAN TORN OVER CLOSER CROSS-STRAIT TIES

China and Taiwan are set to start talks today on a trade deal that could change cross-strait economic relations significantly.

The talks on the Economic Co-operation Framework Agreement come in a climate where Taiwan is viewing China increasingly as its most important market, rather than simply as a manufacturing base for exports. They are thought to be aimed at addressing principles rather than concrete proposals.

However, Taipei has its work cut out to convince a wary public after decades of distrust between the two sides and fears in Taiwan of even greater dependence on its big neighbour.
