China has agreed to begin discussing specific sanctions against Iran, offering the first sign that Beijing may be willing to back a new round of United Nations measures, diplomats from other countries said on Wednesday.
Such a shift would be a breakthrough for the US, which views China's previous reluctance to back sanctions as the biggest stumbling block to its drive to escalate the pressure on Iran. Washington argues that if Beijing's assent is secured, a security resolution would be inevitable.
“China has begun providing us with its views on specific measures for a new round of sanctions,” said a US official.
