India is screening Chinese companies out of contracts to supply equipment for new power plants in favour of local manufacturers as it strives to overcome a severe energy deficit in its fast-growing economy.
Ajay Kumar Dixit, executive vice-president of Siemens' energy division in India, told the Financial Times the Indian government was bypassing Chinese suppliers on the grounds of poor quality and the desire to develop domestic manufacturing capacity.
He also said New Delhi was concerned about the subsidies and export incentives Beijing was extending to its state-owned power sector, allowing it to undercut its competitors.
