IRAN SECURITY FORCES AVERT ANNIVERSARY RALLY

Iran's security forces almost outnumbered a few thousand opposition supporters in Tehran on Saturday to avert a rally on the first anniversary of the disputed presidential election.

Eyewitnesses reported sporadic skirmishes, with police using tear gas and making some arrests, but there were no major clashes. Demonstrators marched around the perimeter of Tehran University, largely in silence in order to avoid arrest and devoid of the opposition's green scarves and wristbands.

Hundreds of plainclothes security forces patrolled the centre of town on motorcycles, wielding batons, with some even chanting “Death to [Mir-Hossein] Moussavi”, the opposition leader who claims the election was stolen from him.
