AUSTRALIAN MINERS EXPECT CONCESSIONS ON ‘SUPERTAX'

Julia Gillard, Australia's newly crowned prime minister, has declared a truce with the country's powerful mining industry over a controversial new resources tax, saying she would “throw the doors open” to the sector to discuss the levy.

Ms Gillard made no promises about changes to the tax but her promise to open negotiations prompted positive statements from the two giants of the industry in Australia, BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto.

Ms Gillard said she had suspended the government's A$38m (US$33m) advertising campaign explaining the tax. In turn, the miners said they would drop their own promotional drive against the government.
