Chinese authorities said yesterday they had contained a 50 sq km oil spill that followed explosions in two oil pipelines in the north-eastern port of Dalian, hailed as one of the country's least polluted cities.
The accident is the second environmental disaster in China in recent weeks following a spill of toxic waste from a copper mine into the water supply in southern Fujian province that raised serious questions about the country's environmental oversight.
The pipelines linking ships to oil tanks in Dalian harbour exploded on Friday night while a Liberian-flagged oil tanker was unloading its cargo, sending flames 30m into the sky and igniting a fire that burned for 15 hours.
