RUDD THROWS HIS SUPPORT BEHIND GILLARD

Kevin Rudd, Australia's former prime minister, has given his backing to successor Julia Gillard's election campaign in a move aimed at healing the rift that has divided the ruling Labor party since he was ousted in June.

Mr Rudd, who hopes to secure a senior cabinet position – possibly foreign affairs – if Labor is re-elected, said he “could not sit idly by” and see Tony Abbott, the opposition leader, “slide in on the quiet”.

Ms Gillard welcomed Mr Rudd's return. “Kevin and I will have a chat in coming days, and I would welcome him on the campaign trail,” she said.
