Gillard to push for minority coalition

Julia Gillard, Australia’s prime minister, will push to form a minority-led government after her Labor party suffered a severe backlash in weekend elections that paved the way for the country’s first hung parliament in seven decades.

Projections yesterday showed Labor winning 72 seats in the 150-seat lower house of parliament with Tony Abbott’s conservative coalition expected to hold 73 seats. The final outcome is subject to pending counts and postal votes.

The tight election means a handful of independents and a lone Green parliamentarian are likely to become king-makers as 76 seats are needed to form a government.
