China’s small towns  are  big money for PCs

Global personal computer makers are facing a battle for the Chinese hinterland as the epicentre of industry growth is shifting to smaller cities and rural areas in the country.

Lenovo, China’s leading PC maker, said purchases at the county level and below account for more than half of its consumer business in terms of unit shipments in China.

Since China is expected to overtake the US as the world’s largest PC market by shipments over the coming 12 months, this makes small-town China – once viewed as a difficult and distant niche market – the mainstream of the global PC market.
