A quest to bring high-speed internet and 3G mobile telephony to Mount Everest, the world’s highest peak, has been won by TeliaSonera.
The Scandinavian telecoms company and Ncell, its Nepalese subsidiary, on Thursday beat rival networks to bring mobile data services to the Everest base camp, 5,200 metres above sea level, and the surrounding area.
The technological breakthrough comes 57 years after the first successful ascent of the mountain by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay.
