David Cameron warned on Wednesday that globalisation “could go into reverse” if China does not live up to its new responsibilities as a global economic power.
Speaking to students at Peking University, the British prime minister insisted that he viewed the rise of China’s economy as an opportunity not a threat, but added that the Chinese economy had to change to consume more and save less to prevent a return to protectionism.
The tough love tone of the speech was intended to offer China the prospect of it becoming the largest economy in the world again, so long as the country was committed to opening up its economy as prosperity rose.
