Minister hints at US redeploying nuclear weapons on S Korea soil

South Korea’s defence minister has broken a taboo by suggesting the country might once again host US nuclear weapons, in response to revelations about an extensive new North Korean atomic facility.

Kim Tae-young told a parliamentary committee that Seoul would consider asking the US to redeploy tactical nuclear weapons, which were withdrawn from the country in 1991.

When asked by a legislator whether the weapons should be brought back, Mr Kim said: “I will review what you said in consultation with members of the Extended Deterrence Policy Committee” – a joint US-South Korean body.
