European Union finance ministers last night signed off on a €85bn ($113bn) bail-out package for Ireland.
They were also set to approve the outlines of a new permanent mechanism for dealing with debt crises in the eurozone, in a bid to head off further contagion affecting borrowing for Portugal and Spain.
In a surprise move, proposals for the permanent mechanism were dramatically accelerated from a December deadline.
