The UK’s coalition government won its increasingly fraught battle over university tuition fees in parliament on Thursday by a vote of 323 to 302.
The plans to treble the cap on fees to £9,000 exposed deep splits within the Liberal Democrat and Conservative parties, while thousands of students massed outside parliament to protest against the policy.
Vince Cable, the business secretary, opened the five-hour House of Commons debate on university funding by admitting there were “strong feelings inside and outside the House”.
