Investors experienced periods of intense volatility surrounding the eurozone debt crisis that emerged in April, the US equity “flash crash” in May and summer fears of a double-dip recession for the US economy.
As the year draws to a close, risky assets such as stocks have returned to levels last seen in September 2008, before the demise of Lehman Brothers, which heralded the darkest chapter of the financial crisis.
