The Renault scandal in which three senior executives have been accused of industrial espionage, threatened to turn into a diplomatic incident when China hit back at claims it could have been the destination for stolen information.
“The accusations are baseless and irresponsible, and the Chinese side cannot accept them,” said Hong Lei, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesman.
Although people with knowledge of the situation said that Renault’s preliminary inquiry, after being tipped off by an anonymous letter, had revealed evidence that at least one Chinese company, possibly even state-owned, was linked to the spy case, Paris was quick to deny any formal allegation.
