Egypt braced for fresh unrest

Egypt was braced for fresh protests against the 30-year rule of its president after Mohamed ElBaradei, the Nobel laureate and reform advocate, returned to Cairo to join the demonstrators.

Mr ElBaradei arrived in Cairo from Vienna following clashes between police and protesters in two Egyptian cities. Security forces reportedly shot dead one protester in the north of the country, the latest of several reported deaths.

Mr ElBaradei, former diplomat for Egypt and ex-chief of the International Atomic Energy Agency, was to meet with allies, including secular and Islamist parties and intellectuals, to try to and co-ordinate a political response to the outburst of anger against the regime of Hosni Mubarak, the president since 1981.
