Taiwan general accused of spying for China

Taiwan has arrested a senior army officer on suspicion of spying for the Chinese, in the most high-profile case of cross-Strait espionage in decades.

Lo Hsieh-che, a major general who headed the army command’s communications, is alleged to have been recruited by the Chinese in 2004 while stationed as a military attaché in Thailand.

Recent attention to alleged spying by China has focused on industrial espionage, or cyberwarfare waged by hackers backed by Beijing. Mr Lo’s case is a reminder that cold war-style spy tactics still play an important part in Chinese intelligence gathering.
