Olympus, the Japanese optical equipment maker best known for its digital cameras, has picked a Briton, who currently heads its European operations, to be its next president.

Tsuyoshi Kikukawa, Olympus’ president, described Mr Woodford’s promotion as part of an effort to make the company more international.
