India’s government has pledged to undertake reforms to reduce corruption, as it seeks to tackle a problem that has overshadowed its second term in office and eroded much of its credibility.
Manmohan Singh, India’s prime minister, faces the biggest test of his seven-year premiership over accusations his government, led by the Congress party, sold access to the mobile phone market at cheap prices to favoured business groups who then quickly sold it on to foreign companies, making huge profits.
Mr Singh is expected today to announce a cross-party parliamentary committee probe into the allocation of second generation mobile phone spectrum by Andimuthu Raja, former telecoms minister.
