When the African National Congress (ANC) party won the country’s first election to be held with universal adult suffrage, Winnie was president of the ANC Women’s League. In came towering turbans, beaded Xhosa accessories, pan-African prints, vibrant kaftans, brash designer suits, shiny braided wigs and large jewellery: she had suffered, fought and won, and she could finally afford the luxuries she had long been denied.
