Arab spring threatened by winter

After seeing two of their kind swept aside by popular revolutions, Arab leaders are fighting back with a vengeance, with both the Libyan and Bahraini regimes moving forcefully against opposition.

Amid heated international debate over the imposition of a no-fly zone to help protect Libyan rebels against a massive offensive by Muammer Gaddafi, regime forces have edged dangerously close to Benghazi, the main rebel city in the east and seat of the opposition national council.

Col Gaddafi’s troops used heavy artillery and tanks to bomb Misurata on Wednesday, the last rebel base in the west of the country.
