Consumers Union eyes Chinese readership

Consumers Union, the US publisher behind Consumer Reports magazine, is considering a launch in China, taking the non-profit organisation into a country known both for the growing spending power of its expanding middle class and its patchy record on product safety.

“We’re taking a look in China and Latin America,” said Jim Guest, president and chief executive, noting that either would represent the first move outside North America in Consumers Union’s 75-year history.

“We’ve done nothing to cultivate [an international digital audience], but it’s definitely on the development plan – especially China,” said Jerry Steinbrink, vice-president of publishing.
