Geithner calls for interim chief at helm

Tim Geithner, the US Treasury secretary, has called on the International Monetary Fund to appoint an interim managing director in the absence of Dominique Strauss-Kahn, reflecting rising concern over damage to the fund’s credibility.

Current and former IMF officials insist that, in practical terms, the organisation largely runs itself, while the protocol for the deputy managing directors to take over the helm temporarily is long-established.

Yet Mr Geithner and others suggest the IMF cannot afford a long interregnum – given the dramatic way in which Mr Strauss-Kahn has been taken out of action by his arrest on sex charges in New York.
