Christine Lagarde, the French finance minister, has launched her bid to become the next managing director of the International Monetary Fund.
Ms Lagarde, who has already won widespread support in Europe for her candidacy, said on Wednesday she considered her nationality neither “a handicap nor an advantage” for the top job in global finance.
But the growing consensus among industrialised countries over Ms Lagarde’s nomination has sparked disagreement with emerging market countries, which argue that the leadership of the fund should no longer be reserved for a European.
