Australia’s mining boom masks crisis in economy

Natural resources exports drive record trade surplus but much of the country is mired in gloom, writes Peter Smith

In language typical of a trucking industry veteran, Michael Byrne, chief of Australian transport group Linfox, recently delivered a brutal assessment of Australia’s economy.

Manufacturing was “stuffed” in New South Wales and Victoria, the nation’s two most populous states, and eastern Australia was mired in “deep recession”.
