India primary education fails to improve

Primary education standards in India are as bad as in Papua New Guinea and crisis-torn Afghanistan and Yemen, according to a team of Indian development economists.

Fast-paced economic growth has failed to improve India’s basic educational standards over the past 15 years, they found in a study of schools in the country’s most populous states.

The Public Report on Basic Education showed that some children were still unable to read a word after three years of schooling across the Hindi-speaking northern belt.
