India struck by 6.8 earthquake

India’s air force was rushing rescue personnel to the mountainous north-eastern state of Sikkim on Sunday night, after the Himalayan region was struck by an earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale.

The epicentre of the quake – which struck at about 6pm local time – was about 64 kilometres from Sikkim’s state capital, Gangtok, a popular tourist destination for visitors from around India.

Known for its lush forests and its Tibetan Buddhist culture, Sikkim, which was once an independent kingdom until it was annexed by India in 1975, is also a popular trekking destination for hikers and mountaineers from around the world.
