Two unmanned Chinese spacecraft have docked in orbit for the first time, in what the government hailed as a “historic breakthrough” in its space programme.
Shenzhou VIII, a spaceship launched on Tuesday, linked with the Tiangong I module in the early hours of Thursday, an exercise carried out live on state television.
Wu Ping, spokeswoman for the China manned space engineering office, said the docking could be called only an initial success because more challenging exercises lay ahead, including a second unmanned docking this month and manned dockings next year.
