‘You need Chinese friends to survive’

The greatest thing about Shanghai? Eric Ransdell, a TV production company boss, thinks for a moment and then says “The best thing about this city is that it just keeps getting better.”

He has lived in Shanghai for 10 years, arriving to make a documentary for a British TV channel, only to find the funding had dried up after 9/11. He stayed.

“By the time I realised that the project I came here for wasn’t going to happen, all my stuff was in a container being shipped across the ocean, so I decided to stay and see what happened, because it is such an exciting city to live in.
