Labour unrest sweeps China

Thousands of employees at an LG Display factory in eastern China went on strike this week over year-end bonuses, part of a wave of industrial unrest sweeping the country as workers become increasingly assertive.

By yesterday evening the three-day dispute, which involved some 8,000 people and forced a partial production shutdown at the Nanjing plant, appeared to be nearing resolution.

The rise in Chinese industrial action has been attributed to the weakening global economy, which has prompted companies to cut pay and benefits, together with labour shortages and rising living costs that have encouraged workers to push for better wages and conditions.
