Envoys pulled out of Syria as Assad bombards rebels

European and Gulf states pulled their ambassadors out of Syria yesterday, as government forces again pummelled the rebellious city of Homs and Russia claimed President Bashar al-Assad was ready to launch reforms.

Turkey threw its weight behind a new international effort to force Mr Assad to halt the violence, saying it could not stay silent after the “fiasco” of the Russian and Chinese veto of UN Security Council action on Syria.

The move came as the Syrian opposition claimed the regime was using the international paralysis as a “licence to kill” in an effort to crush the near 11-month uprising against it.
