Julia Gillard, Australia’s prime minister, has called a leadership ballot for the Labor party as she seeks to head off a challenge from Kevin Rudd, who resigned as foreign minister on Wednesday.
Announcing the vote, which will take place on Monday, Ms Gillard told reporters in Adelaide yesterday: “Following the resignation of Kevin Rudd . . . I had formed this view that we need a leadership ballot in order to settle this question once and for all.”
“For far too long we have seen squabbling in the Labor party, which has obscured the government’s achievements.”
