Slowing imports push China back to trade surplus

China’s trade balance shifted back into positive territory in March as exports from the world’s biggest trader of goods accelerated and imports slowed, according to government data released Tuesday.

Exports in March increased 8.9 per cent from the same month last year while imports rose 5.3 per cent, leaving the country with a $5.4bn trade surplus for the month and a $670m surplus for the year so far. In February China recorded a $31.5bn trade deficit.

The trade figures are being closely watched for signs of further deterioration in China’s economy, which has been gradually slowing since the start of last year.
