North Korea to launch rocket in defiance of UN

North Korea is mounting a satellite on to a long-range rocket for an imminent launch that defies UN Security Council resolutions, according to media visiting the country.

The BBC reported that an official briefed visiting reporters yesterday that the Kwangmyongsong-3 (Shining Star) satellite was being placed in the Unha-3 (Galaxy) rocket that is standing on a launchpad in the north-west of the country.

Nuclear-armed Pyong-yang plans to release the satellite – to be used to monitor crops and weather – into orbit some time between April 12 and 16 after the rocket is blasted on a southwards trajectory towards the Philippines.
