Summit goes ahead despite tensions

Just a day after China blasted the US for meddling in its domestic affairs, Hu Jintao, Chinese president, welcomed US officials at their annual bilateral summit.

“It is impossible for China and the United States to see eye-to-eye on every issue, but both sides must know how to respect each other,” Mr Hu said yesterday.

Amid the diplomatic storm over Chen Guangcheng, the Chinese dissident who had sought refuge last week in the US embassy, there had been speculation that the summit, the highest-level regular meeting between the two countries, would be scrapped.
